Context:
For the Lil Nas X debut album Montero (2021), the visual campaign centers on themes of rebirth, self-actualization, and transformation — depicted through surreal, dreamlike landscapes where the artist emerges into a new identity and state of being. The album cover and promotional photos feature Lil Nas X levitating above a lush, utopian world full of vibrant colors, butterflies, classical elements, and symbolic imagery that evokes emergence from a cocoon and ascent into a more authentic self. The artwork — inspired by a combination of meme culture, fine art references (such as John Stephens’ Genesis II), and narrative ideas of cyclical life and liberation — uses the butterfly motif as a metaphor for metamorphosis and personal evolution.

In this project, I contributed by creating the digital backgrounds that form the immersive visual environments supporting the album’s narrative. My work helped translate the concept of new birth and transformation from cocoon into butterfly into richly detailed digital spaces that visually anchor the promotional imagery and deepen its emotional and conceptual impact.
